Wolf & Mississippi River Trips in the Memphis Area
Upper Wolf River Conditions
photo

This is a wilderness float, you should be rested and prepared for moderate physical exertion.  You will experience nature as it exists, once the ride starts we cannot stop it for you to get off.

Spring is just around the corner. The water is still extemely cold but daytime temps make float trips tolerable.  The days are getting longer and we should see buds on the trees in a few weeks.

Hazards:  Wear your lifevest. Hypothermia is a very real danger this time of year.  The river can be floated safely through the winter BUT you must be prepared. You must be prepared for  night time temps even if you do not plan to be on the water after sundown.  Guide service is available for inexperienced  paddlers who wish to float during the winter season.  Only experienced paddlers will be permitted to rent boats without a guide for the winter season.

This is a very scenic float for the active/adventurous person, but if you are soft stay on the couch.

I floated the ghost a few days ago, it was 97 degrees but the water was cold and swimming is a good way to cool off. Bateman bridge area is a favorite, it has a sandy bottom.

I floated the Moscow section on 7/8/07. The heat index was near 100 but it actually felt comfortable on the river. The water was cool and we had a light breeze all day.
The water is still low but there was only one point where I had to get out to move the canoe about 20ft over sand. Oh I did have to get out and pull the canoe at the take out at Moscow bridge (this take out is pretty overgrown and easy to miss).
The flies are almost nonexistent now. We did see a few snakes and other wildlife. We rounded one bend in the river a caught a young button buck in the river getting a drink. He was caught so off guard he just stood there for about 5 minutes(we were only about 20ft away). We stopped and watched until he finally jumped back onto the bank and ran but he never spooked or flagged his tail(pretty cool).
The scenery is great right now and we finished this float in less than 3 hours.

Two sightings of a bald eagle today. This morning I was quietly floating Moscow section solo to do trail maintenance and spotted the eagle less than a mile below Bateman bridge. Later in the afternoon I spoke with some paddlers taking out at Bateman and they spotted an eagle up at the lake. The moscow section has been cleared of the downed trees obstructing boat passage. I saw several dear today bedding down next to the river. The weather was perfect.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get a load of gravel spread on the Bateman Bridge parking area?
